The section dedicated to Flow offers a selection of artworks from different eras – from historical avant-garde to contemporary times – animated by a specific interest in the decomposition of reality, synthetic data, numerical calculations, and binary programming language. The room welcomes its visitors with Umberto Boccioni’s renowned painting, Materia. It also includes artworks by Pablo Picasso and Giacomo Balla, suggesting that the origin of a precise sensitivity to the topic of dematerialization can already be found in late Futurism and synthetic Cubism. The artworks interpret the tension between reality and representation, between material and visual data, standing at the foundation of numerous experiments carried out through the following decades. Recently, these influences converged into the vast field of digital experimentation, studying the impact of informatization and digital networks on the perception and representation of material reality.
