In the artworks belonging to the series Data and Dragons by Addie Wagenknecht (Portland, USA, 1981), computers and cables communicate with the Wi-Fi network, interacting with the surrounding environment but not with the viewers, whose function remains secret. These devices are “listening machines”, capturing information from the world. The blinking of green lights indicates the ongoing process; however, their objective is precluded, reminding us of the widespread lack of consciousness about what is created on the web, its invisible materiality, and its value.
