Giacomo Balla

Numeri innamorati, 1923 ca

One of the most radical and enigmatic paintings by Giacomo Balla (Turin, 1871 – Rome, 1958) depicts a sequence of numbers (3-5-4-8). In a mature phase of his research, the artist experiments with a representation of nature traced back to its internal organization logic, its immaterial components, and the most dynamic aspect of reality: the infinite sequence of interconnections guiding the universe’s transformation, impossible to visualize if not through numerical structures and mathematical models.
