Considerations about simulation processes depicting reality found fertile ground in the artistic sphere, thanks to the increasing availability of digital tools on the market. In the painting field, for instance, the possibility of abandoning the canvas' material reality in favor of a virtual or hybrid dimension was heavily conditioned by the spread of post-production software. Likewise, video games became artists' visual inspiration as early as the Seventies. However, in many cases – and progressively more often – they have been used as proper creative spaces to design alternative and immaterial realities defined by a reflection on the medium's nature. Finally, following the development of immersive technologies, environmental simulations have started to accompany simpler simulations experienced through a screen. The second part of this Simulation section presents various artworks that resonate with Man and Code's capabilities to build imaginary worlds beyond material data, seeking visions of a reality freed from the concreteness of matter.
