JODI

SOD, 1999

The artworks created since the Nineties by the art duo JODI – Joan Heemskerk (Kaatsheuvel, The Netherlands, 1968) and Dirk Paesmans (Bruxelles, Belgium, 1965) – are founded on the use of media such as websites and video games. SOD is a visual hacking operation carried out on the video game MS DOS Wolfenstein 3D (1992), acclaimed as the first model of a "first- person shooter" and for its innovative use of 3D graphics. Deconstructing the game, the artists have transformed the virtual environment into a pseudo-abstract labyrinth of geometrical shapes and pixeled patterns in black, white, and grey to make apparent the codified nature of the program's simulated reality.
