The rethinking of painting's materiality is at the basis of the artworks created by Petra Cortright (Santa Barbara, USA, 1986). Her digital paintings, characterized by pictorial marks traced on a graphic tablet, gain their physicality only in their final step, when printed on aluminum, canvas, or paper. The process's origin lies in pre-existing images, often found online, of which nothing is left, as hundreds of layers of strokes, cuts, colors, and blur are applied during the process. Only the artworks' titles suggest their subjects; keywords and file names compose a creative process that is potentially infinitely editable.
