Jeffrey Shaw (Melbourne, Australia, 1944) is a pioneer of experimentation applied to new technologies. His The Golden Calf is an augmented reality installation transferring the biblical myth of the golden calf into a simulated environment. The monitor acts as a window into a world where the virtual animal exists, placed inside the viewer's space. At the same time, the pedestal's presence as a support base for the visual device highlights the idol's material absence. Through an inversion of the biblical story, the extended reality designed by Shaw seems to warn the public against believing in something intangible.
