Channa Horwitz

Sonakinatography “Error at 648“, 1980

The title Sonakinatography combines the words “sound” (sona), “movement” (kineto), and “notation” (graphy). In this series, Channa Horwitz (Los Angeles, USA, 1932-2013) uses colors and numbers to trace movements on a standardized grid, using a notation system based on numbers between 1 and 8, following the squares of the graph paper she used. Many of her artworks were initially intended as partitions, detailed notations for dancers, musicians, and artists. Horwitz’s research expresses her desire to reduce the pictorial composition to its essential elements, imposing a structure governed by mathematical operations in which, nonetheless, chance and error might still play a significant role.
