Carla Accardi

Cono arancio, 1966; Rotolo nero, 1968; Rotolo giallo, 1968

The “sign” system – a sort of identification code, in the manner of computer systems – elaborated by Carla Accardi (Trapani, 1924 – Rome, 2014) for her monochrome canvas found a new surface during the Sixties. The Sicofoil, a very malleable plastic material, is first applied to the frame as a direct substitute for the canvas and then used in its original industrial roll form, on which the artist paints signs that appear to develop in the vacuum of real space. Chasing the utopic idea of eliminating the surface, Accardi opens her contemplation on painting to the concept of dematerialization.
