Ryoji Ikeda

data.gram, 2022

Artist and composer Ryoji Ikeda (Gifu, Japan, 1966) put the challenge to materialize the invisible at the center of his research. With his series data.gram, he gives a visible and audible shape to massive amounts of scientific data concerning phenomena of varied nature, including Internet traffic and geomagnetic fields. Each phenomenon can be described through data and traced back to mathematic languages, including those the human eye cannot perceive. Consequently, the mathematical language, hiding behind digital sounds and pictures, can be used to create an audiovisual experience of those data, represented by Ikeda through binary code, graphically embodied by the predominance of black and white.
