Cory Arcangel (Buffalo, USA, 1978) investigates the relationship between technology and pop culture. Developing his research through video games, websites, and social media, he aims to understand digital culture’s dynamics. In his artwork (coffee cup), the artist lets an artificial intelligence algorithm scroll Starbucks’ Instagram page, simulating our natural behavior when facing the flow of pictures and information to which we are constantly subjected. The coffee company tried to become the “third place” of Nienties’ society – that spot besides work and home where people gather. However, today, social media websites most likely established themselves as everyone’s third place everywhere.
