In the series Beyond Black by Andrés Ramírez Gaviria (Bogotà, Peru, 1975), the deepest black rules the whole artwork, appearing as a background emptied of signs and matter, a reflective surface mirroring the viewer’s gaze. The nearly invisible grid on the glass panels’ surface can only be perceived through the lens of an atomic force microscope (capable of operating on a nanometric scale). In fact, only Gaviria’s list of materials accompanying the artwork reveals the presence of something invisible to the naked eye.
