BERGAMO
Leap into the void. Art Beyond Matter.  >  Void - Room 1

Gerhard von Graevenitz

Homogene Struktur mit positiven Elementen, 1961

The research carried out by von Graevenitz (Schilde, Belgium, 1934 – Habkern, Switzerland, 1983) intertwines with that of several groups of artists investigating visual perception in the mid-twentieth century. The embossments and indentations characterizing the series of artworks Weisse Strukturen (“White Structures”, early Sixties) come from a game die’s sides, pressed onto the preparatory layer of paint. The symmetric and systematic protuberances create a pattern of tactile marks questioning our visual perception of the void while opening a reflection around the nature of linguistic and mathematical codes.
