Enrico Castellani (Castelmassa, 1930 – Celleno, 2017) places the infinite possibilities of interaction between light and surface at the center of his research. Castellani created his white extroflections following Lucio Fontana’s spatialist revolution, which stripped paintings’ matter to exchange it for space and emptiness. The canvas’s protrusions and indentations allow the surface to interact with light in many ways. Furthermore, the absence of color frees the painting from its connotation as a container and transforms it into a total space where the dimensions of Everything and Nothing coincide.
