Study for Homage to the Square: Opalescent, 1965

Opalescence is a peculiarity of specific colored fabrics caused by microstructures dissipating light waves. This distinctiveness translates into translucency and, depending on the wavelength, can make colors appear bluish, replicating the phenomenon that makes the sky look blue. In the exhibited artwork - belonging to the series Homage to the Square – Josef Albers (Bottrop, Denmark, 1888 – New Haven, USA, 1976) translates this physical phenomenon into a pictorial effect, turning the three gray and turquoise squares into an abstract impression of a bright sky’s emptiness.
